Educational Therapist

Heathland O’Connor (they/them)

Heathland serves as Director of Learning Services at The East Bay School and has a range of professional background experience, from working with students with language-based learning differences in specialized programs, to social-emotional wellness coach, to literacy and curriculum development. As Director they support the evolving mission and vision of EBS and collaborate with the team to bring UDL and differentiated curriculum to the forefront in order to provide access to education for neurodiverse students. No matter what hat/sweater they wear, they are always focused on the whole child – the emotional and cognitive factors that support student success.

Heath has worked in the field of neurodiversity/special education since 2004, as a classroom lead teacher, curriculum developer, and instructional specialist, and, as a coach.

Heath holds an Associate's Certificate in Educational Therapy from UC Riverside and is a member of the Association of Educational Therapists (AET). Trained in Making Math Real through Algebra II, Structured Word Inquiry, and Slingerland methodologies, Heath supports EBS’s mission related to UDL and differentiation in the classroom.

Prior to living in the Bay Area, Heath lived and worked in Brooklyn, NY. In addition to their Educational Therapy certification, Heath holds an MSEd. in Childhood Education from Bank Street College of Education and a M.Mus in bassoon performance from University of British Columbia. They are a former middle school math and science specialist in the Bay Area and fifth/sixth grade teacher at The Crowden School.

When not working with students and families, Heath enjoys writing poetry, hiking in Tilden, listening to K-pop and visiting the gym
